What is Permaculture Specialty Coffee?

Coffee is graded on a 100-point scale, and beans which score above 80 points are considered specialty coffee. Along the entire supply chain the focus is on unique, high-quality beans grown in high altitudes, often by inter-generational farms and communities. Specialty coffee assures the right conditions to create a fair and economically secure way to grow coffee in these high altitude communities.

Permaculture is a holistic approach to managing land and resources while creating circular systems, where the relations between the land and its people promotes wellbeing for present and future generations. Permaculture generally follows three principles; Care for the Earth, Care for the People, and Fair Share.

Permaculture-grown specialty coffee brings together the elements of environmental regeneration and socio-economic security. In turn, it shifts the attention from traditional, mass production, monoculture practices into biodiverse and climate-resilient farms which establish the conditions for human security. The coffee industry for many years has been in need for a shake-up, and permaculture is here to do just that.

What is the Lupuna Coffee Bean and How is it Grown?

This coffee bean has a very balanced profile and an excellent body. The beans come from a lot which is protected by a very large (and sacred) Lupuna tree. It’s located in the Oxapampa-Ashaninka-Yanesha biosphere reserve in Peru, where a diverse group of coffee farmers from the Yanesha indigenous communities produce our excellent coffee – all in accordance with the permaculture principles. The Lupuna tree, which brings much needed shade to the rainforest, is the namesake of this permaculture lot.

The Lupuna tree can reach 70m high and is one of the largest trees in the Amazonian rainforest ecosystem. The species has been drastically reduced by logging practices for manufacturing purposes, even though it is considered a sacred tree for the communities living in the rainforest. The tree is a powerful, sacred spirit to respect and protect. At 1650m in altitude, this Lupuna bean is grown via permaculture practices and is free from any type of pesticide, herbicide or unnatural fertilizers.

What can I expect?

Grown in Peru and roasted in Amsterdam, this cup of revolutionary coffee will not disappoint. It is a bean grown through rigorous permaculture design, in conditions that favor the planet, people and profit for the long-term sustainability of the coffee industry.

The blend brings notes of caramel, raw brown sugar, vanilla and molasses which creates a delicate body with sweet and fruity acidity level. You can expect a delicate espresso with sweet and fruity tones, or a comforting filter coffee with a delicious caramel kick.
